Now that vROps is finally out there, and before we’ll get our hands “dirty”, I thought that it can be a good idea to explain how exactly does the migration works behind the scenes.
So lets go!
1. Migration agent deployment – File Delivery
When starting the migration, the ‘migrator.zip‘ file will be copied to the 5.8.x instance.
2. Migration agent deployment – Install
Once copying the migrator has completed, the ‘Migration Communicator’ and ‘Migration Agent’ will be installed.
3. Migration agent deployment – Init and validation
Initialization and validation of the ‘Migration communicator’ will take place before the actual migration starts.
4. Migration agent deployment – Migration
Once migration agent is installed, migration hook is out of the loop
6.0 Migration Tool communicates with Migration Communicator on 5.8.1 which gives instruction control to Agent.
Migration agent performs Stop / Start / Restart / Clean-up / Status
The migration agent is responsible for:
Sending FSDB data over HTTPS
Sending CIQ and ALIVE data to GemFire
5. Migration agent deployment – Cleanup
Both the ‘Migration communicator’ and the ‘Migration agent’ will be uninstalled
Simple, right? 😉
The next series of posts will discuses the migration step-by-step process, the new features and many other goodies
